HR and Recruitment. China is going through an IT & internet boom right now – there is simply a shortage of qualified technical people. The salaries and compensation packages for qualified staff is going higher and higher. Finding the right people is my number one challenge.



Profitability. Start-up companies have no brand, no image and no track record. No one is willing to give you even one rmb for you service. It takes time, patience and effort to make sales for a start-up company in China. Leaders must have new ideas that will make an impact in the marketplace.



Protect yourself – but still take calculated risks. You have to be very smart about whom you trust, but you also have to be brave. You can’t trust everyone, but you can’t trust everyone either. Business success is about risk. You have to consider each case – and each person – as an individual situation. It’s hard to have a constant rule about who to trust – and experience plays an important role. You may fail in the beginning, but you can’t let it scare you off.

I worked hard to build a reputation as a reliable, trustworthy partner. Friends and colleagues respect honesty, but also experience and insight. I’m known as someone with solid experience and a long-term view of business.



Have guiding principles about business that you are extremely clear on. I have 3 rules about business that have served me well during my career: 1) Business must serve the basic needs of the people – which will help you find opportunities that result in big markets. 2) Businesses must utilize the latest technological developments to solve traditional business problems. 3) Choose a business opportunity that has high potential growth, but can be exploited immediately. If your business model requires you to spend many years before you can IPO or realize good profits, it is not a winning idea.

Build your own network. Don’t just network with people to build specific business deals, but also to build trust and get to know them intimately. Learn about their education, family and character. This is what will help you build your business and execute a business plan that will be successful.

US Secretary of Treasury Paulson is a perfect example of this. He is building his network with Chinese officials through friendly, pleasant talks – not by complaining or raising unattractive issues. He understands the value of building a network.

The goal of a network is to build trust and gradually grow your business in cooperation with partners. It takes patience, but it also helps to open your eyes to new business opportunities.
