I had to spend a few years learning the market. A lot of preconceived ideas and "common-sense" notions didn't work out. The key to succeeding in China is to to find a balance. You have to be flexible enough to adjust to circumstances, but stable enough to stay the course once you determine your optimal business plan.

It take a long time to make things work in China. Much longer than you would think. Don't let the frenetic pace of life fool you -- things take time to develop here. Make sure you have the resources to stay in the game for the long term.

Easy to be overwhelmed by the possibilities in China. It can be hard to stay focused, because it seems like another great possibility is always popping up. If you chase after every potential business idea, you will accomplish nothing. Keep your eyes on a single prize -- and focus on executing well.

Be skeptical. Remember – even the most honest, well-meaning local or expat brings only one very limited perspective to the debate. Resist the urge to make sweeping generalizations based on limited inputs. Don't measure yourself by what other people tell you about their business. It probably isn't true.

Focus and persistence really pay off. Many people have jumped the fence looking for greener pastures. If you can maintain a consistent market message for 18 months, it is the equivalent of 5 or 6 years in the West.

Figure out the market. I finally figured out how to use my international experience as a benefit. The China market is so new and is so dynamic that being a foreigner is not always a disadvantage. You may not know much about China , but the locals don't know about international business, branding, or growth strategies.

Develop a specialty that you can grow with. China is enormous. Generalists will get swamped here. Be really good at one thing, and then cast your net wide. The supply of customers is huge, and growing. If you try to be all things to all people you will get killed.
